「Nanka chigau」is not 'Wrong!' ❌

The most important thing to remember is that「なんか違う」is not the same as「間違っている」(machigatteiru - it's wrong) or「ダメだ」(dame da - it's no good).

  • 「間違っている」: Judgmental, pointing out a clear, provable mistake.
  • 「なんか違う」: Intuitive, expressing dissatisfaction, a vague feeling of mismatch that the speaker themselves may not be able to explain.

2. When expressing a feeling about a situation or person

When you feel a subtle change in a relationship or an atmosphere.

3. When an idea/solution seems off

At work, when you hear a proposal that your gut feeling tells you is not the best option.
