The "Safe Talk" Tactic: 当たり障りのない

The "Safe Talk" Tactic: 当たり障りのない

The "Safe Talk" Tactic: 当たり障りのない (atarisawari no nai)

Living in Japan for a long time, you've likely become a master at choosing "safe" topics for tricky situations, like sharing an elevator with your boss or meeting your partner's parents for the first time. In those moments, you're using the art of 当たり障りのない. 😌

This phrase is composed of:

  • 当たり (atari): To hit, strike, or affect.
  • 障り (sawari): To hinder, offend, or be an obstacle.

➡️ 当たり障りのない describes a statement, action, or topic that is harmless, neutral, non-controversial, and won't offend anyone. It's the ultimate weapon for preserving harmony (和 - wa) in communication.

🛠️ How to use

This is a social skill the Japanese use daily to smoothly navigate sensitive situations.

1. When you're out of topics 🗣️

The most classic and safest topic is the weather. A simple 「いいお天気ですね」(Nice weather, isn't it?) or 「急に寒くなりましたね」(It's gotten cold all of a sudden, hasn't it?) is the perfect 当たり障りのない conversation starter.

2. When giving a "diplomatic" opinion 😐

A coworker asks you about a movie you thought was terrible. Instead of bluntly saying 「つまらなかった」(It was boring), a 当たり障りのない response would be:

「うーん、色々と考えさせられる映画でしたね。」 (Hmm, it was a movie that really makes you think, wasn't it?)

This answer isn't a lie, but it also doesn't crush the other person's enthusiasm.

3. When you want to keep your opinion to yourself 🤫

In a meeting, when you don't want to commit to an opinion on an idea just yet, you can say:

当たり障りのないことしか言えませんが、面白い視点だと思います。」 (I can only say something non-committal/general, but I think it's an interesting perspective.)

This allows you to participate in the conversation without taking a firm stance.

✨ Why is it important?

In a society that values harmony, being too direct or opinionated can be seen as tactless or confrontational. Being 当たり障りのない doesn't mean you're fake or have no opinions. It's a smart communication tool that helps you "read the air" and choose your words wisely to maintain smooth social relationships. 🕊️
