Decoding Tatemae: 3 Hidden Cues to Read Japanese People 🕵️
Anyone who studies Japanese knows the concepts of 本音 (honne - true feelings) and 建前 (tatemae - public face). But knowing the theory is one thing; spotting it in real life is another skill. With over 10 years of experience, I've identified 3 clear 'signals' to know when someone is using Tatemae
with you.
1. Overly Grand, Abstract, and Vague Statements 뜬
When you present an idea and receive compliments like:
- 「素晴らしいですね!」(Subarashii desu ne! - That's wonderful!)
(Taihen benkyou ni narimasu - I'm learning so much from this.)
...but these are followed by no specific questions about the details, it's highly likely Tatemae
. Someone who is genuinely interested (Honne) would dig deeper: "How does this part work specifically?", "What would the cost be if we do that?". General praise is often a polite way to end a conversation.
2. A "Positive" Reply with No Concrete Next Steps 🗓️
This is a classic sign, especially in a business context. When you get impressive-sounding answers like:
- 「前向きに検討させていただきます。」(Maemuki ni kentou sasete itadakimasu - We will consider it positively.)
(Ichido mochikaette kentou shimasu - We'll take it back with us to consider.)
But no specific meeting or deadline is proposed afterward. If they were serious, they would say, "So, shall we meet again this Friday?" Otherwise, it's very likely a polite refusal.
3. Inconsistent Body Language 😄 + 😑
This is the most subtle reading skill. Their mouth might be smiling and saying 「いいですね!」 (Ii desu ne! - That's nice!), but:
- Their eyes aren't smiling; they might be looking away.
- They cross their arms or lean back, creating distance.
- There's a slight pause before they respond.
When words and actions don't match, trust the actions. That's usually where the Honne
is hiding.
Recognizing Tatemae
isn't about becoming cynical. It's about becoming better at reading the air (空気を読む), avoiding false expectations, and building more genuine relationships. Happy communicating!
